ORANGE-LICIOUS~~
Today's Monday Mantra ... Brighten your day with COLOR!
This morning a passing thunderstorm woke me from a deep sleep. The dark skies and windy conditions made me want to climb right back into bed... But with a busy day ahead, I knew I needed something to give me that PUSH. As I began to sift thru my closet for options, I remembered a study I read that said certain colors can change your mood... dark colors can make you mellow, while lighter more vibrant colors create energy and excitement. SO, I decided to get excited about this gloomy day by wearing something ORANGE! My first choice for jewelry was My Tortoise shell necklace which has such beautiful amber highlights ... And for makeup... I paired NYX "Red Hott" Lip Pencil with Milani's "SWEET NECTAR" Lipstick... A ORANGE-LICIOUS DREAM!

Glamour...
The bible teaches us that words are spirits. Proverbs 18:21 says that death and life are in the power of our tongues, so its important that we are careful of the words we use. I’ve found the same to be true even working in the beauty industry. As professional artists, we often use words to describe what we see in an attempt to collectively create “A LOOK.” Whether it be a photo shoot, fashion show, or merely servicing a client, we use words to enlighten those around us of the image we’re attempting to create. Our colorful minds sing through our words as they crescendo the passion of our thoughts. And when our thoughts are conveyed through words, the rhythm and flow of them develops creative harmony. Here is a great example of words being used to create a mood… At this years fashion week in London, Runway Chronicles beauty editor penned this colorful statement to describe the look of UNIQUE’s Fall 2010 collection, “A whimsical, woodsy runway was the perfect setting for Topshop to show the furry, animal-inspired looks that made up Unique’s Fall/Winter 2010 collection. “Squirrel, raccoon, and porcupine headpieces topped off most outfits, leaving little room for alternative interpretations of the show’s forest creature theme. Most of the models were bundled in layers upon layers of neutral earth tones that looked comfy and cozy, with chunky knitted arm and leg warmers stretched over pant legs and sleeves.”
As you can see, when using the right words, all of your senses are tickled as you are able to almost feel like you were actually sitting in the front row of that runway show. So words are not only death or life provoking, but sensory controlling. Which is why I am so intrigued to know the meaning of words… and while writing my book (hint, hint…. COMING soon… Spring 2011) I did some research on the origin of beauty industry lingo, and was shocked at what I found…
I discovered that the word “GLAMOUR” when used in its original form meant
Witchcraft; magic charm; a spell affecting the eye, making objects appear different from what they really are. Or… to have a “glamour spell” cast by a witch was to make somebody see things in a different way by using trickery or illusion. And this method of sorcery was often times practiced when a woman who desired a man, that under normal circumstances, she could not have or attract. Webster says it this way, A kind of haze in the air, causing things to appear different from what they really are.
Now, to some that discovery might not be important… but for me, this definition spoke volumes about the word Glamour or being Glamorous. In a perfect world as a makeup artist/minister… my hope is that the women I service would have an inner beauty that would permeate on to their outward appearance. And that inner beauty coupled with my finishing touches would create TRUE BEAUTY. So, the thought of facilitating a façade of enchantment to the point that a person appears to be something that they’re NOT is certainly devastating! As I sit here writing I can recall on numerous occasions spinning my client around to the mirror and describing her completed look as Glamorous! And although my intentions were not devious, I spoke it, performed it, and it was, in fact, Glamour! So, see… Words are more powerful than you realize. They have the power to:
Allure or Oppose
Kill or Bring life
Wound or Heal
Discourage or Encourage
Tear down or Build up…. And in my world, MAKE UP whatever I want them to be!
Several years ago, NBA star, Charles Barkley was accused of not being a good example to kids because of his personal issues off the court, and his response to the media was simply, “PARENTS are the roll models, it is NOT my responsibility to raise your kids, I PLAY BASKETBALL!” And when that statement was released it raised major contention and discussions amongst community leaders and NBA officials. But is it really his responsibility? In like manner, is it our responsibility as Christians working in the beauty industry to take on the burdens of others by imparting truth and encouragement. Should we be careful of what we say so that WE aren’t being alluring or deceptive with the intent of getting the result we want? Or should just stick to doing makeup, hair, and wardrobe, while demonstrating all that comes with it?
Here is my challenge to you… Since you now know the power of your words, and their importance, how will you use them?? Remember people hang on to your words and live through them! So, ask yourself this question, are you speaking LIFE or DEATH? More specifically, when you use the word GLAMOUR to describe a look you’re creating, are you developing a facade thru your clients in hopes of allurement, trickery, or illusion? Some would argue, “not to that extreme, Kym”… but again, now that you know… what will you do with the POWER in your MOUTH?!
**This is a thought provoking commentary…. It is not to pass judgment or to be accusatory. Please read with an open mind while taking heed to this GOD GIVEN challenge. Much LOVE!

Mantra Monday's 5 benefits of being a "SLEEPING BEAUTY" ... December 6, 2010

All the hustle and bustle of the holiday season can leave our body's tired and lifeless, so how much better do you think our skin actually looks when it's tired? For some reason, most people don't think about the negative effects that ripping and running can have on our skin. So what better way to refresh and rejuvenate our skin then to get some SLEEP? There is no doubt that getting the proper rest every night can offer many lasting benefits. Doctors across the nation all agree that getting 7-9 hours of sleep can only affect our bodies positively because of the multiple healing factors. So why do we deprive ourselves of the shut eye we need? Maybe we don't recognize the benefits of our most common and overlooked beauty aid. So here are 5 reasons why I think Sleep is most important:
1. BEAUTY is in the "EYES" OF THE BEHOLDER- When a person is tired, sad, or aging the first signs are shown in their eyes. So, before covering up the negative effects of life with makeup, or slathering anti aging creams to remedy these issues our eyes need to REST! The reason many people are stuck hauling overnight bags on their morning commute to work is because of sleep deprivation. Lack of sleep can cause stagnant blood in the vessels under the eyes that won't properly drain when you're not rested. So, taking "Long winks" is part of your solution to reducing dark circles, puffiness and even lines and wrinkles because you're allowing your body’s circulatory system what it needs to operate effectively.
2. LAY DOWN TO GET DOWN! Substantial medical evidence suggests some fascinating links between sleep and weight loss. It sounds like something you'd hear on a late night infomercial -- just around the time you are reaching for that bag of cookies because you can't sleep. LOL But as wild as the idea sounds, it is so important to get the proper rest if your intention is weight loss. And here's why... If you’re feeling sleepy at work/school, you may be tempted to reach for a cup of coffee (or several cups) and a doughnut for a quick shot of energy. Later you may skip the gym and pick up takeout on your way home because you're still tired and all of the fat and sugar will create this roller coaster effect with your level of energy. When you finally find yourself back in your bed, you are too wound up to sleep. It’s a vicious cycle, and eventually this sleep deprivation can sabotage your waistline and your health. Sleeping or resting your body is just as key as working out when it comes to keeping your body toned, and the same goes for your skin. Overnight, skin cells regenerate the facial muscles that create lines and wrinkles so we need to relax!
3. LONG WINKS HELP YOU THINK! During the night our body goes through 3 sleep cycles, light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep. However, it is during our "deep sleep cycle" that most of our brain repair takes place. While at rest, the portion of the brain activity that control emotions, decision-making processes, and social interaction shuts down and refreshes itself, allowing us to maintain optimal emotional and social functioning later on when we are awake. Also, cell growth and cell repair takes place which helps to combat the negative affects of stress.
4. WHEN YOU SNOOZE, YOU DON'T LOOSE! To all of my Active folks: YOU CAN NOW REJOICE in knowing that while you're snoozing, you're getting plenty accomplished. Slumbering is nature's most powerful beauty treatment. Not only do the optimal seven to nine hours a night leave you looking luminous, but also many hair, face, and body products are most effective overnight because they penetrate better when you're at REST. Spend more time in bed and wake up to the amazing benefits of rest. While your skin is resting your circulation is flowing, eliminating the big skin aggravaters like acne and eczema to name a few.
5. REST ASSURED... I've been blessed to travel around the world to some of best hotels and no matter where I stay, FABULOUS bedding is a MUST. I recently stayed at the infamous Rooservelt Hotel, part of the Waldorf Astoria in New Orleans and the bedding was heavenly! The layering and textures of the bedding created the optimum sleeping experience that I'll cherish forever. The Westin and W hotels also pride themselves in creating the most comfortable experience possible. Visit www.whotelsthestore.com to order your own set of quality bedding to ensure you'll have the best sleeping experience while at home. Statistics show that you get better rest when you're comfortable and the colors around you whisper serenity. I currently have the walls in my bedroom painted taupe and steel grey, with all white linens to mimic the hotel decor of many of the places I stay. The thread count of your sheets matter as well. I prefer Egyptian Cotton sheets that have a 1000+ thread count. I also layer my bedding with chenille throws, fluffy pillows, and down duvets as seen below... *Yawning... And all this talk of sleep has caused me to suddenly become sleeeeepy..... So....
This blog goes out to all of my "Midnight Mirada's" and "All Night Ramblers" who have adopted "Puffy's mantra... I can't stop, and I won't stop! Well, you need to STOP... DROP, and ROLL over and get some sleep!! :-)
Where in the world is KYM LEE?... In my bedroom changing my sheets and fluffing my pillows.... LIGHTS OUT... PEACE~
